I have a 2000 BMW 540 and I'm thinking about converting to the 4.2 later this year. I test drove one yesterday and was very impressed.

Default Love it !

The key thing that keeps me with Audi is the quattro system. AWD improves handling unbelievably on wet or snowy roads.

Make sure to get the 4.2 with sports suspension as it handles much better.

Just got my 4.2 two weeks ago and can't say enough good things about it.

What I like:
Handling
Deep sound of V8 (though not too loud)
Seats are very comfortable
Very fun to drive
Great acceleration (though I don't think quite as good as the 540).
Flared fenders give it the perfect sense of sportiness.

Default What is there not to like?

I have the sport version and it gives much better control and shift pattern. Seats are also very supportive and comfortable. I'm 6'2" and with a family and like the extra space (I had '99 A8 before and actually have more headroom in the A6). We get some snow and ice in the winter and the Quattro is great. Has been very reliable with over 30k Km.

Default Great car..

Love body style, looks very aggressive. Nice V8 rumble. Lots of luxury, telescoping steering wheel, heated front back seats and steering wheel, beautiful interior with good sound system, etc.

Dislikes: lousy wipers (not specific to 4.2), a little too creaky interior, most importantly is slight vibration b/w 45-50.

Bottom line, in my opinion one of the sexiest and best made cars out there and for the price, excellent value (much more beautiful than the 540). Every time I enter the car I enjoy the experience!

Default So far...

I love that V8! But I hate that transmission!

Great car and an absolute joy to own. In '01, I was considering a manual 540i, but after all was said and done, it was going to be ~$60k! After haggling, I got a near fully equipped 4.2 (no nav) for under $50k. Sure, it's not as quite as quick and certainly doesn't handle as well as the 540i (I chose the non-sport w/ 5 spoke forged rims as it is primarily a city car), but the money, quattro, and interior made it a no-brainer. And I consider myself a BMW guy! At least pre-Bangle.

Default Like the looks and the v8. also reliability and not many on the roads..

dislike the transmission and tall gearing.. Its a great cruiser but not really a 0 to 60 machine.. Quattro is good but not as good as previous versions.. still, better car than BMW all round.

Default Thanks for the feedback everyone. My BMW 540.....

does seem to have more punch and probably handles a little better but I really liked the interior of the A6 and the value. The one I test drove did have the sport package which was very nice.

My one concern is buying the last model year. Might have to wait for the new A6 coming out in 2005....

How is the Audi reliability compared to the BMW?

Default Hard to say.

My feeling is that BMW's are slightly better in terms of reliablity, but you will hear otherwise from people in this group. Cars aside, the big complaint is with the dealers. It seems the Audi dealers still have the mass-market VW attitude where many BMW dealers are a little more established and understand that customers who buy their cars expect more. That said, my dealer has been excellent the few times I've actually brought the car in for service.

Consumers Report seem to like Audi and BMW about the same, depending on model.
