Hey guys as many of you know i am thinking about buying my son a late year A6 either 98 or 99. I see 2 for sale that are interesting 1998 with 120K miles for 6K and a 1999 with 82K for 8K. i guess that the 1999 might be the better choice but it still has 82K miles so i was wondering how many miles do you have so far? and how long do you expect it to last (2.8 quattro)? Also what kind of gas mileage are you getting with the 2.8 quattro?

...with upkeep than with mileage, in general.
So pick the better car. An of course, never buy a car that you dont have a pre-purchase inspection done by your mechanic of choice ( could even be a dealer, not the one selling it) - up on a lift.

Maintenance: Bought mine from estate sale of my best friend(a second Dad to me). He was a retired machinist who knew his cars well. Long story short .... three weeks after he bought it ... he fell and broke his hip ... didn't make it three months .... I helped the executor with the estate and the car sat .... no body wanted to touch it and I knew it was his pride and joy. They even had it inspected. Tie rods and Timing Belt due! Look at my other posts:
Must Do's: Tie Rods, Timing Belt, Short Coolant hose between the two water pumps, Transmission Fluid drain, filter replace & rubber pan gasket, spark plugs ...... all for very good reason ... again see my other posts and other peoples posts ..... good luck!

82k is right about the time that major service items need to be done. TB is the biggest, but it's also about the time that the suspension bushings, bearings, shocks etc wear out and need their first replacement.
By 120k most of the maintenance should have already been done and you'll be good for a while. Having service records is key for a used Audi. Lower miles is not always better if you buy it right before it needs major service.
