i am thinking about getting the A6 2.7turbo automatic and want to modify it, chip and exhast. I have heard that the A4 automatic can only handle about 240hp max. Does the A6 have the same automatic tranny as the A4? How much power can the A6 automatic take??
thanks

The unit used in the A4 is the ZF 5HP19A and later the ZF 5HP19ARM, the cousin unit to the higher performance 5HP18ARM used in the ///M3 autos.
The A4 and A6 have a lot of cool Porsche-quality parts, including carbon fiber driveshafts, the little over-the-mirror visor, etc. The transmission is Porsche-quality, but it's not a Porsche trans.
The ZF 5HP19 uses the same torque converter and input unit as the Boxster, but the input is turned upside down and moved backward (away from the housing for the clutches) to work with the mid-engine layout of the Boxster. ZF actually produces a special auto unit for the 996, RMFHP9K is the converter coding, I'm not sure what the number for the whole trans. is. It uses the same clutch system as the S8 automatic, except in a line side-by-side and backward compared to the S8 to lower the transmission's center of gravity slightly and make the weight distribution within the housing more balanced. The input is above the A8/S8 input, due to the engine location packaging constraints of the 911 chassis.
