My guess would be to break up laminar flow before the measurement is taken or last ditch air filter.

I pulled it out w/o removing the MAF sensor from the housing and w/o destroying the screen.

Default Last ditch filter from what I have read and therefore not needed as long as the air filter is in

correctly. Besides, it it had stopped anything in the past, it would have been wedged between the plastic flow straightener and the metal screen. I could not find anything, so I assume this has never happened.

I'm leaning towards breaking up laminar flow more than anything .

Searched and found an S4 message: pulled it out without damaging it. May want to redo instructions
