Default HVAC fan intermittently inop. Any experiences?

This is the 1999 A6 Sedan. Apparently the fan has intermittently refused to blow air over the past few years. It only happens when the wife is driving, and only (it seems) in really hot weather. She parks the car at work in the sun, then jumps in the car to drive home: no air. The heater controls show "full power" but the fan does not blow any air. Eventually the fan will decide to work again and all is well.

Wife has been complaining about this for a few years (it happens one a month in the Summer) but since she speaks femalebabble and I speak Engrish, the problem was not clearly communicated. "The goddamn AC doesn't work again" is not a lot to go on.

Today I hooked a small lightbulb directly to the fan motor and positioned it sticking out of the glove box; when the fan gets power, the bulb lights. Hopefully when the fan quits again, wife will be able to see whether the light is on or off: on = bad fan motor, off = evil wiring or controller issues.

Has anyone experienced this (not the communication problem with the fairer sex, the fan problem)?

No idea, but I like the lightbulb approach!

Check the Tech Articles -- Kris Hansen did a write up on pulling the fan out and cleaning/replacing.

Default Thanks, but step one is determining if it is the fan. Why did he replace his?

Replacement looks easy once the glove box is out.

Could be a bad fan motor, but I like your lightbulb trick!

Default Tried it, but guess I got it wrong. I kept trying to hook the light bulb to my wife.

Ba-DOOMP-boomp, tip your waitress, I'm here 'til Thursday, you're a great crowd..
