I may sell my "new" C5

<shrugs> We have 2.8's in two cars. Average performance, decent gas mileage, super reliable.
By this time next year the C5 should be gone in favor of a C6...and yes, it will be another naturally aspirated V6.

Was the non-turbo 1.8 ever available in the C5? Here I only see them in the C4
and though I know the 2.0 was available from 2002, I don't think I've ever seen one in real life, as our tax system then (partly displacement-based) made it no cheaper than the more powerful 1.8T.
The 2.8 is unusual here, the much cheaper 1.8T/1.9TDI/2.4 are far more common, and with the 2.5TDI offering 2.8-like performance at similar retail price and much lower fuel consumption, the 2.8 found few buyers.

Are you?
For example, check the model guide for 2001. The vehicle itself is either an A6 2.8, A6 2.7T or A6 4.2. Each engine choice then has a list of available options.
I suppose if you want to be hyper-technical, engine choice is listed at the top as a "trim level," and then a list of available options follows for each trim level. At this depth of minutae, however, we'd both be wrong.
Call it a draw.

.

Are you sure there isn't something wrong with the tuning of the engine? I have the 2.8 avant I really can't call it slow. Sure you have to train the transmission to get it to perform properly but then you just stick it in tip mode and you can shift as quickly as you want. I would definitely vag-com it for problems and give it a tuneup.
Mine just doesn't have any problem getting out of its own way. Definitely quicker than the majority of other cars on the road.
Look at this...
Avant curb weight = 3,560 lbs
Hp = 200
Torque = 207
Hp to lbs 1/17.8
Torque to lbs 1/17.2
2000 Gti curb weight = 2,765 lbs
Hp = 115
Torque = 122
Hp to lbs 1/24
Torque to lbs 1/22.7
Get a tune up, Drive in the right gear, or buy a rocketship like the 4.2

My recollections exactly. Sure, I have much more fun in my 4.2, but that doesn't belittle the 2.8.
For me, my frontrack one was comfy, reliable, fun, decent on gas, and predictable.
