Default I never told you about the RS 6's liking for high-octane fuel, did I?

Actually, it's more of a disliking for non-high-octane gas. The owner's manual says that it should be run on 98 RON unleaded (I think it mentions low-sulphur as well) but can be run on 95 RON fuel with moderate throttle usage. Don't ever use 91 RON fuel.

Basically, it says that putting the toe in too much with low-octane fuel could damage the engine. I'm running it on Shell Optimax which is over 98 RON and almost sulphur-free. The only tank of regular ULSP (ultra-low sulphur petrol) that's been through it is the one the dealer filled it with on delivery.

Just something else for prospective RS 6 owners to consider!

Default Sorry, I don't know the MON rating as we only use RON values

However, Shell's US website does have information on their unleaded fuels RON, MON and US octane ratings. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Optimax as sold in the UK is basically the same as Premium sold in the US, but far more expensive!

http://www.countonshell.com/products/product_info/gasoline_properties.html</a

Default Related question

I saw a reference recently to lead replacement petrol, why is that necessary? We went all-unleaded over here eons ago.

Default Lead replacement petrol is for older cars

Either classic cars or just "old bangers" that can't use regular unleaded fuel either because they don't have knock control or hardened valve seats. LRP has various additives to increase the anti-knock properties and detergents to scrub deposits.

I *think* 98 RON is the same as 91 (RON+MON)/2 in the U.S. (but don't quote me!)

Default Not to make you jealous or anything, but . . .

U.S. 93 octane (RON + MON)/2 is currently <$1.50 a (U.S., not Imperial) gallon locally. If Bob W. is correct, then that'd be about 100 RON. Here in Atlanta, we have some of the lowest gas prices in the U.S.

I fully admit to jealousy regarding your RS ;-)

And in California, we're paying about $1.75 for crappy 91!
