I STFA. On my wifes 03' A6 what's the part circled yellow & why is it whining when car is cold?

Default I STFA. On my wifes 03' A6 what's the part circled yellow & why is it whining when car is cold?

I was just going to say I looked it up and it looks like the Check valve.not 100%

Default Also known as secondary or auxiliary air pump. Just runs for about the first minute to assist ...
getting the cats up to operating temperature.

Default they do fail but I do not think you will get a CEL until it actually dies. I do not know....
if you can do any preventative maintenance now so that pump keeps runnning for a while longer either sorry. Mine just whines a bit but not enough to bother doing anything about yet....

yea, no CEL yet. it has wined for awhile now but wife says the whining is now starting to sputter.

Sounds like a failed secondary/auxiliary air pump would be easily lived without. Wouldn't it? Am I missing something obvious (I'm sure I am) but the cats being not yet up to temperature seems like all it would affect is emissions.
