If I but a Vag-Com Adapter from Ebay...
Is there seperate software that I need to purchase? $22 seems way to cheap for what seems to be an essential item for an Audi owner to have.

You should buy the proper bit of kit from VAG-COM - only then are you entitled....
to download their software.
It is only by buying their hardware that they are able to write the software which we all use to keep our cars running without relying upon the dealers exorbitant charges for often simple repairs.

Click the download button "For ISO-COM and most Third-Party interfaces" (link inside)
That's the free shareware from ross-tech.

in order to use the latest and full featured VAG-COM software from Ross-tech you need to buy their
cable, If you but the ebay cable you are limited to the free versions from Ross-tech with not support from Ross-Tech, and software from other vendors, STFA.
Although I have not been able to find out what the specific limitations are in the free Ross-tech software, only that you cannot do serious/advanced diagnostics with the free versions.
Also notice that this board is very pro Ross-Tech, probably for good reason but I've noticed that every time someone brings up using an "ebay" cable the first response is "buy genuine a Ross-Tech cable" so something to that affect.
Last thing is that there is a specific forum for computer interfacing here:

https://forums.audiworld.com/vag/</a

Ebay adapter are a waste of money....
...you'll have to purchase the software from RossTech and, assuming that it actually works, will be without tech support.
Those $22 cables are really $35 after shipping. Add the $99 for the software and you're looking at a $134 that may, or may not, work. Most likely it won't work.
Furthermore, these cables only work with the old software....
A total waste of money and time...

Buy the real thing, the product and the support are great! Andy really helped me figure out a
problem on Friday with getting the car to recognize the steering angle sensor. If he had not I would have been forced to go to the stealership.
