If you've got an older C5 like I do you CAN purchase a 3rd party cable and use VAG-COM.
As far as support goes the others are correct; Ross tech is NOT going to support you in getting the cable to work, you'll have to figure that out yourself.
You CAN purchase older versions of the software for $99 AND do everything you need to do on an older C5. I'm not going to go into details about the different connection types or features on the newer software. All of that is documented on Ross-tech's site.
If you find you want to upgrade later to a full VAG COM then Ross tech is nice enough to apply the $99 software license as a credit on the full version.
If you're in a pinch like I was, and you're computer savy then it's a reasonable risk to take. Just make sure you get a decent cable and not just some ebay china thing. Also make sure you know how to get it working driver wise first before going the full monty with the VAG software license. Download the free version and try out the cable, if you cant get it to work you're only out the cost of the cable, cut your losses and buy a real vag-com.
