Default Ignition Switch

Suddenly my climate control, headlights, wipers stopped working.Car still turns on and runs fine. After searching through the forums, I have concluded that it is the ignition switch.

My car is 1998 A6Q. can someone point me to a write up on how to replace the ignition switch on my car?

Thank you very much,

Default I don't think there is one.

But Bentley has the procedure. If I were you, I'd check the X-relay (aka the load reduction relay) too.

Default Actually, there is a writeup, but for a D2 A8...

...from PaulW's archives, and it actually is very similar to the process for the C5 A6 as well.

Here is a link to PaulW's writeup.

Here is a link to my writeup on how to remove the steering column parts in an A6, which has all the steps you need excpet for the ignition switch itself. (Note: you do not have to remove the signal stalk)

Hope this helps!!

Default Let me look that up...oh wait. That's right, my Bentley won't work. :(

Looking at the D2 writeup, it looks very similar to the older Audis; the switch replacement is easy/simple...but you need a special socket to pull the steering wheel (Be sure to line it up straight before pulling it, so you get it back on correctly).

Default I marked the steering wheel and the steering column before I slid the wheel off...

...so I would be able to easily replace the steering wheel properly centered.

Default The only drawback is that the lower column trim is secured by two screws hidden behind the wheel...

I suppose that someone could remove the screws one at a time with the car on, turning the wheel to get at each screw. I think once the lower column trim is off, the ignition switch is accessible.

Default No, I had to reinstall after a hard drive failure...now I can't activate it...

There is an online activation, but it just doesn't go anywhere (let it sit overnight and throughout a day).
Calling the cust. service I get an answering machine, leave messages, but get no return calls.
They all fell off the earth. :/
