Default

ahh...thought they were independent circuits. But, in typical Audi fashion, no such luck.

Default I doubt any of the clusters functions are linked directly. Even the speedo.

First place the signal is supposed to go is the ABS controller, and THEN to the cluster. It's more important for the ABS to have the info first.

Default Classic failing ECT sensor symptoms. Easy fix. Could be something else, but that sure sounds like

a bad ECT sensor. Plus if it was really a bad t-stat it would drop on highway but warm back up in the city.

Default Could just be your battery going bad

It might have just enough amps to run the starter motor, but once the secondary air pump comes on too, it can't handle it without assist from alternator. I had my battery low recently and had similar difficulty as you until it was fully recharged.

Especially possible since the problem is only on cold starts where the battery has been sitting for a while. But don't rule out other possibilities too!

Default Still could be the ECT

I swear, I changed my ECT 2 months ago. Then the other day I saw in VAG-COM that the ECT thought my coolant was 3 degrees celcius in the morning, but the car was parked in the garage and anyway it wasn't even that cold outside last night.

The reading was even more ridiculus today before I pulled it out to change it again---its telling me 0 degrees celcius (on the mark, I swear!) when it must be 15-20 celcius. Upon install of the new ECT, coolant temp. is now 16.5 degrees celcius.

Defective new parts really burn me up!
