My overhead lights won't come on when you open the door unless you have the ignition key switched on.
Furthermore, if the light control switch is in the O position the lights come on when I'm driving when I stop and then start off again, such as at a stop sign. They come on then fade out.
Any ideas?

I did that tonight, and after 30 seconds the emergency flashers started flashing until I hit the unlock on the remote, but still no courtesy lights. The alarm doesn't appear to arm after 30 seconds, or maybe that's the flashers going off instead? Weird. Wish I could figure it out.

If it is in fact a door related issue:
Door Contact Repair DIY
My front passenger door wasn't activating the comfort lights or my alarm, meaning the door trigger (contact sensor) was bad. I use the DIY to find and disassemble the module, then I tested the circuit until I found the break in the loop. My problem was a line on the circuit board had deteriorated and was feeding the ground signal required at the contact swith. So I jumped it with a ground signal from the harness and voila it worked! I didn't solder on the board seeing as how my equipment is busted, but I was able to get a ground to the switch (w/ red & blue wires in the DIY) and it all works now.
Find your bad door then go to work on the module.

My 2002 A6 Avant was having similar issues, plus a "pulsating" of the lights off and on when either front door was opened after a moment or two. The lights literally would go off and on, slowly. After much hunting of goblins by the dealer, they did determine that it was the door latches. They replaced both latch mechanisms — first the driver side, then, a couple of months later, when the problems returned, the passenger side. Haven't had any issues since. (PS: My "headlights on" warning tone stopped working, too, during all this.) Luckily, I bought the 3 yr/36k extended warranty from CarMax, where I bought the car, and it was covered, but parts and labor PER SIDE at my Audi dealer (I only take it to an Audi dealer) were in the neighborhood of $600 each. Try everything else suggested in the post first!
