This maybe old news to many of you, but I'll warn you anyway. I tried out the ITrip FM modulator for the IPod before going through with hardwiring in my A6 and my wife's Touareg and it totally bites. The static is terrible.
Unless the horrible reception is unique to the Bay Area, I can't believe Griffin can even market this piece of crap with a straight face. And yes, I tuned it to multiple different stations and tried it on 4 different receivers. All sucked.
Don't waste your money on this piece of garbage. Mine is going back.

....I think you have an isolated issue.
I owned a few, tested them in Chicago in several different auto's and they were all good.
Worked best in the VOLVO XC 90 with my testing.
Seems to work best in places where radio statiions are not every other selection though (ie: not in a major city)

I tried it in two cars (home and driving around), my home stereo and a portable. I also tried multiple blank stations. I got the same popping static on all tries. And the static was the same type on each station attempt, so I don't think it was interference from a neighboring radio signal.
Perhaps it just doesn't work well in cities. Would be helpful if they said that in advance, so they 80%+ of the US population that lives in a major metropolitan area wouldn't have to waste their time buying and returning it.

Maybe this is a fluke and you got a bad unit?
