Default I've test driven and owned both (Audi & BMW). Both excel in different ways. But, comparing ....

an A6 2.8 to a 540i is ridiculous and unfair (to the A6). The A6 2.8 is not meant to compete with 540i's. The A6 2.8 is the bottom of Audi's A6 line while the 540i is the top of BMW's 5 series.

If more comparable models are compared, like the A6 2.7T (or 4.2) to the 540i, then the Audi will hold its own. The Audi will probably come off as classier but still quite sporty and very quick and more "cost effective." The Bimmer will come off as more pure sports vehicle with unbeatable handling and road feel but probably look a little overpriced, relative to the Audi.

Some folks enjoy comparing Yugo's to Mustang GT's, too.
