If I recall, it's quite nice. My experience was in a Japanese-market '01 S8. It uses DVD-ROM, yet I think it can only play CDs (not DVD audio, etc.). However, it also has a slot for MiniDisc behind that motorized screen. There's also build-in TV tuner that allows reception of TV channels. It also controls the CD changer in the trunk. Also, the S8 Nav Plus has only one slot for the DVD (besides the MD slot) so if you want to use the navigation system, you'll have to play CD from the changer.
The navigation system is also displayed in the center console (between the speedo and the tach) in full color (but with simplified arrows and distance marks instead of the 3-D map displayed on the Nav Plus screen).
THe only thing I didn't like about it is the cursor control, which is done by the left ****. Very touchy and not very precise. If I'm in a hurry it takes several tries to get the right selection.
Otherwise, it is a very slick unit compared to the archaic units offered by AoA in the States. And I like the addition of the MiniDisc player as it is more compact and manageable than CD (or MP3 CDs).
