japanese reliability vs german style and performance

i currently drive a highly reliable 2000 acura tl w/ navi. it's got 84k and runs like a charm. i'm looking into a 2000 a6 avant with 72k for $13k. i know my acura will run forever with minimal costs. i hear tons of great stories of audi's, but i also have people tell me to watchout.
should i be worried about replacing a reliable japanese car with the car i really want, an audi wagon? which some say are not very reliable. i don't want to do it and then have to break the bank in 2 years when something goes wrong.
my desire to for an AWD german sport wagon tells to buy it... me trying to "make the right decision", says keep your acura.
what should i do?? i really want the audi...

most Japanese cars. If you are actually mechanically attuned to your cars, you'll catch most problems before they snowball into something that will leave you stranded.
I prefer to think of German cars as British or Italian car lite ;-P
So it all depends on your willingness to pay attention to details and stay on top of maintenance. If you enjoy driving, that trade-off is probably worth it.
Oh, and if you can swing it, the S6 is worth every penny of price of entry. The only S6 specific foible is the potential for wheel vibration that is very hard to track down. It only shows up in some cars, and then most commonly if lowered and/or custom wheels.

Maintenance cost is the same IMO the positive thing about the Acura-tranny is covered 7years/100K miles...I like the Audi better-style,feel,build, handling. Acura is a bit noisier but perkier from start. Avants are heavy but...
The Avant must be pristine w/TB done and no suspension/brake needs at all for that price.
My 2 cents

that has documented service history and pm's done, you probably won't have a problem free experience....I don't think that exists with any car, but I think it's fair to say you'll have more with the Audi.
These are complex cars and costly to fix. That wagon was over $40K new, and repairs aren't cheap.

it was perceived as a negative. I have always regarded you as an authority on this site. And you last few sig updates had very attractive females posing with, your obvious affection, Alfa Romeos.
