A VW/Audi enthusiast I know said it sounds like it might be the fuel pump, but it's definitely fuel pressure/delivery related. He said if the feul pressure is not just right, it can cause rough idle, delayed acceleration, and cause the car to shift at the wrong RPM. He couldn't address my main concern w/o looking at my car, which was:
What could PepBoys have effed up during belt & tensioner replacement, and power steering system flush/refill? Meaning, where they were working, what's in that area that could they could've screwed up to affect fuel pressure/delivery?

They are denying all liability regarding anything besides the belt, the belt tensioner, and the power steering. Their claim is that because they didn't touch anything else, they're not responsible. I wonder if driving w/o my belt for 5 minutes could have caused this.

I've escalated this to the Area Director with a 2 page email, who now has 48 hours to respond to this issue. If they do not, then it goes corporate. If Pepboys decides not to correct their error, my next letters will be to Dealers & Repairs Unit of CT DMV and to CT Department of Consumer Protection. According to the attorneys I work for, we may be able to have their store suspended from doing any service or repairs for as little as a few days to as long the state takes to conduct their investigation.
