I had my car in to do all wheel alignment about 2 months ago. The rear wheels were done, the front wheels had some trouble since one of my control arms was bent.

Fast forward to today. All 8 control arms at the front are replaced along with tie rod ends. Come back to the same place (Audi dealer) just to do the front wheel alignment.

Was told by the rep that they can't do just the front wheels, they need to do all wheels, though I did say I was in just 2 months ago and the rear wheels were aligned. His explanation was that they put equipment on all wheels anyways, and they adjust the front wheels relative to the rear wheels.

Just wanted to find out what the story is, and why you can't just align the front wheels without worrying about the rear ones.

Thoughts? Comments?

Default I "think" you need to do all four.....

Can't be THAT much more expensive for 4 wheel vs. 2 wheel alignment.

Default i think as well, everything is adjusted...front has more stuff than rear

especially if you've had a bunch of stuff replaced. you don't want to shred a set of tires.

Yes, it is. It's very important that the rear wheels follow the fronts.

Default The front has LESS adjustment than the rear, only toe, and camber equalization..

The rear has camber, and toe on each side. I don't think you can adjust the caster angle on either front or rear. Well, you probably could by moving the subframe a little..

Default Correct. 4-wheels alignment should ALWAYS be don e- nto just on Q

The purpose of 4-wheel alignment is to first get the thrust line of the car aligned (wheels with centerline of chassis), and THEN align the front wheels to spec (which is slightly off - but symmetrically).

Even no-Q cars should have it done.

however, most cars have none or limited adjust ability on rear wheels. With our cars, that is not the case.

A 4-wh job should be done on everything. And it should nto cost all that much more, either. the extra money is to pay for the equipment, not because it takes that much more time.

Yes. One of my bad handling spells was rear adjustment.

Default Just got the car back - one of the rear wheels was a few seconds off!

I guess it pays to do the alignment regularly, one of the rear wheels was just a few seconds off, but enough that they adjusted it.

My passenger front tire was so out that now when it's aligned, my brake discs were making noise when turning, until after about 10 km, when they got quieter and quieter and disappeared
