Default In states, manual 540 would soundly beat a S6. They run 5.5-5.7 60's and 14.1-14.3

The Automatic 540 does 14.6 1/4 which is in line with S6. Timeslips.
We really dont know what the S6 does here, since no timeslips have been provided.

Default It is if AWD is not a high priority for the buyer

As was my case. I shoped the 540it very closely against the S6. If it had been the roomier, better appointed, stealthier and less expensive vehicle, I would have bought it. Of course it was none of those so the S6 was an easy decision, but being a sunbelt driver, the AWD was not a deal breaker for me.

Default yeah, a 540i with the sport gearing is much faster

The sport gearing is only available with the stick, and then you still can get it without it. Why? Because the sport gearing kills the gas mileage, it actually makes it worse than an Audi.

I don't know if the 540i wagon is available with the sport gearing anymore, now that it is a "T" (touring). It used to be the "Sport wagon".

Default Why do we care which one is faster?

Being somewhat new to this forum, I wonder where it is possible to be concerned with the top speed (how fast) these wonderful cars (S6 and 540's) can go?

Here in the US, we generally keep under 90MPH (and in most cities and even sub-urban areas, much under 90MPH).

I would think that acceleration (quickness) would be where one would argue that one car or another would blow the other one away?

And, after reading the posts, I assume that some believe the S6 is quicker 0-100kph and some think the 540 is quicker. I would bet that a manual transmission 540 would be quicker than an S6 with the automatic, but which one is quicker when we are comparing apples to apples?

Default have fun with your word games

When we say faster in this argument we all mean 0-60 or 1/4 except for you. If I want to speak of top speed I'll type "top speed".

I would presume both cars have the same top speed or very close to it, 155mph limited.

Apples to Apples is fastest availble versus fastest available. Yes, that means BMW gets to use a stick. If Audi comes our poorly in and auto versus stick comparo, well, there's a way to fix that!

Default Re: S6 is more expensive and slower

Autoweek has tested both cars and S6 was Quicker that than the 540 Wagon Manual.

Both cars weigh about the same, and while the BMW has higher peak torque, the Audi has 50 more horsepower. It's easy to figure out who will win.

Yes, a manual is a better sporting transmission, but again, 99% of people can't get peak performance out of a manual. They can however mash a pedal to the floor and let an auto do the work.

Default There is no 540 Wagon with manual. Never has been in the USA.

The sport package with the shorter gear ratio however has always been available on the 540 wagon. I saw the Autoweek where they mentioned the S6 was faster (er..ummm quicker) than the last 540 wagon (which would have to have been an automatic) that they tested but they never mentioned if that wagon had the sport package. Anyway, they're both within a couple tenths of each other which is pretty much a tie in my book and makes other factors more important.

Actually, the BMW 540 sportwagon is limited at 128...surprisingly.
