Default Is a K&N air filter worth putting into my '02 2.7T?

How much should I expect it to cost me? What is the gain in hp from swapping out the stock air filter and replacing it with a K&N?

Default Cost? Expect it to cost the price of the K&N, then the price a of new MAF and a paper filter.

Skip the K&N. The oil generally results in premature MAF failure and the gain (if there is one) isn't worth it.

Default Even if K&Ns were NOT known for messing up MAFs, it's just not worth it.

A good, clean paper filter will give you plenty of airflow. I have not seen a single reliable study showing the actual gains you get with a K&N.

Default No data on MAF failure

This is a myth that has no data behind it. K&N has been around for many years. The problem is the Bosch MAF sucks. The Hitachi upgrades are far superior. I have had a K&N fiiter for 80K miles and just changed to a cold induction sytem. And it doesn't do much for performace.

Default Nope. No gains. Possible fouling of MAF and they do admit extra dirt compared to the factory filter.

Take a look at this filter test. No K&N for me!

Oh, before you look at the results and say, look how much better the K&N flows... the airbox on the 2.7t is not a point of restriction. It has adequate flow capacity with the stock filter. Yes, the K&N may flow better if the regular airbox filter is restricting airflow but our airbox is well sized for the engine.

Filter test

Default Eh? I had nothing but problems with my MAF fouling with my K&N... I'd clean the MAF, it'd be fin

for a while, till it'd get all gunked up again. Switched back to a paper filter, SAME MAF mind you, no problems for 50k miles.

I did one on both my Saabs, never saw a difference or any damage. I'd say don't do it.

Default No.

IME, they don't filter as well as a regular paper filter, and often result in MAF trouble.

Even if it would give 5-15hp, wouldn't do it.

YMMV.

Default NOOOO

I had my K&N for a while now and I recently had problems with the MAF sensor. Good thing my mech has a VAG, so I changed it immediatly to the OEM air filter.
