looks like the tranny on the 2.8 is going out...
From a standstill, when I give the car gas the RPMs will climb and randomly the car will slam into gear (like if you were to drop the clutch in a manual). Anybody else have this symptom before and know what the problem was?
Did a few searches, some mentioned some cheap sensors I could replace. If not, other posts mentioned flushing the tranny fluid.
It'll cost 100+ to do the fluid, if that's the case...how long would ot prolong the trannys life? I was thinking about just dropping the tranny and swapping in a used OEM one.
I've got 150k on the clock. Any ideas/comments/suggestions?

Re: looks like the tranny on the 2.8 is going out...
I have the exact same problem. It feels like someone is hitting me frim behid when going from 1st to 2nd gear. I have a 98 (although most parts seem to be 99's) 2.8 Quattro Tiptronic. I got it from my grandmother 2 years ago and she only had 32,000 miles on it. It was doing it then, and my SMART dad said it had a "learning" tranny/computer and wasn't used to the way I drove.
Well, I've babied it till 65K and it is still going good. I have a warranty till 100K miles that will cover it, but don't want to replace it if it isn't the tranny that's the issue. I've spent about $500 in diagnosis. Fluids, fine, solinoids .?. What about the codes, can I check them myself? I'll buy any adaprer i need.
I heard that there is a connection (don't know exactly what it is) from the tranny that send power/driveshaft to the rear wheels that can get messed up. Is this possible?
I'm looking at possibly getting a new tranny and new engine with this warranty and putting in a 2000 S4 engine. Is that possible?

what does your receipt say...?
Really... think about it... why would any dealer put in a rebuilt tranny and on an invoice for the work, call it "new"??? Too easy to find out with major negative consequences for the dealer, I'd say your receipt should have the answer.... ;-o
