Loud, almost grinding noise at startup. please help!
There is no regularity or repeatability to this problem, except that it only happens at startup and predominantly (but not always) happens at the first startup of the day.
The engine of my 99 Avant makes a very loud, grinding-like noise. It will not become louder if you rev the engine or if you drive. The car will move and operate fine while this noise is going on and, for the most part, it will just be this constant screeching/grinding noise. It sounds almost like a belt isn't moving or something isn't getting enough oil or something along those lines. Usually before I get from my garage to the end of my driveway (about 50 yards) it is gone. 2 days ago it lasted for a good 45 seconds and took on a new aspect while I was driving. It began to alternate in intensities between very loud and slightly high pitched (again, having nothing to do with how hard I was accelerating or the gear or how fast I was going). It hasn't happened since that day.
Sorry for the somewhat long post, but I'm very confused and starting to get a little worried at this point since it is happening about 3 times a week now. My car has gone weeks at school never moving and, when started, has never acted like this. Now that I'm home and driving it daily it seems be a more prominent issue.

Could be a number of things...I'd get it to a shop ASAP!
I know you say it isn't changing pitch with the engine speed, what if it happened to be a timing belt tensioner roller?
Just get it to a qualified independent shop or dealership to find out what's going on.

Some ideas:
1. Check that the timing belt and all its associated parts are running smoothly - if not - catastrophe impending!
2. Haydraulic lifters? Common "problem" (which isnt a serious problem at all, actually)
3. Lubrication problem - yikes! What grade oil are you ruinning BTW?
Get it to an expert, unless you are one. At which point, break out the old stethoscope pronto.
