Low RPM Hesitation & Surging

Wifes 2000 A6 with the 2.8 has a slight hesitation at takeofff, especialy if it is a slow takeoff. When I drove it the other night I stoppedand checked the idle speed. It is aprox 800 rpm, steady. Kick the RPMs up to 950 and the RPMs start to surge. You can not hold the RPMs steady from 950 to 1400. This is in idle. My semi uneducated guess is the map sensor. What do you guys think.
Hate to just go buy an expensive unreturnable part on a whim.
Suggestions?

Hey Beyond
Before you buy a new one it might be worth trying to clean it. CRC has a "new" product out that is made specifically for cleaning the Mass Air flow Sensor.

I bought mine at the Autobarn.com for around $10 including shipping.
I have also heard of people using Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) to clean it. On my MKIII neither of these worked, but my idling was way worse that what you are describing. I just replaced the MAF and all is well again.
Hope this helps
Cheers

I did not find a vacume leak. That is the first thing I checked.
I do not have the equipment to check for codes. So I do not have any codes. Is there a way to check without a reader?

I have never heard of this cleaner. I was thinking of using a strong rubbing alcohol. The CRC MAF cleaner sounds like a better idea. I will have to check and see if it avaliable localy, if not I will probaly order some.
Thanks

Did you ever get a fix for this problem. I have nearly the identical symptoms with my 2005 c6 ?

Post is over 7 years old and he has a total of 13 posts ... 3 of them here. I doubt you will hear from him anytime soon.
surging is typicaly a sign of running too rich. I would be checking for codes . After that i would investigate the coolant temp sensor and the MAF cleaning exercise.
