There are a few mechanical, non-cosmetic differences between 2001 and 2002...<edited>
I think the turbos were improved sometime mid-2001 model year, so later build 2001 have the same cooling lines that the 2002 has.
As far as other mechanical differences, the 2002 has:
"Sport" tranny mode (vs. 2001's 4-3-2)
628 servotronic steering module relay (vs. 605)
235 tires on sport model (vs. 225, I think lateer 2001 had 235s)
bi-xenon headlamps
Power folding sideview mirrors (kind of cool!)
ESP standard equipment
Symphony II headunit with in-dash CD changer
Track (F/R) is different 60.9/61.8 (2002), 58.9/58.2 (2001)
...and yes...non-HP2 front brake calipers
I suppose the HP2 caliper is "better" than the 2002+ version of the front brakes. Yes, it is supposed to be higher performance, dual piston, etc., but it has certainly limited my wheel choices!
And then there is the list of cosmetic things that come to mind:
Redesigned face (grill, bumper, hood, flush headlight washers, etc.)
thicker glass (quieter inside, so they claim)
exposed exhaust tips (but teeny tiny tips)
wood trim around hazard switch
aluminum instrument cluster rings (I think the cluster is illuminated when car is running regardless of light switch position)
amber rear turn signals
dual rear fogs lights
gloss black vs. carbon fiber rear plate surround
rubbery plastic vs. gloss plastic for light switch
I am sure I've missed something, but this is what I could come up with.

Sure, why not...
...because that is just IMPOSSIBLE!!!
No, I pulled the info from the historical AW model guide. I just remember regretting not getting the 2002 once I learned about many of the differences...but many of them are the cosmetic ones... Anyway, I think I listed these differences in my head before, but I got some of the specifics from the historical guide for this post ))

AW Historical Model Guide
