Map lights/pen lights
My 99 A6 has what I think should be 2 beam lights- the red lights on the overhead that would light up anything that is passed under them- but otherwise not noticable.
They are so weak that they don't illuminate what I pass under them- Are they not really pen lights?

They should provide a red glow over the center console area.
They're not intended to "light up" the interior per se, just to provide what I'd call "ambient lighting". If you pass you hand under them, you should see a clear red glow. If they're not putting out enough light to do that, they may need to be replaced.
