massive oil leak

I had my timing belt replaced 700 miles ago after the engine (2.8) stopped when I was backing out of the garage. Forunately,no damage was done and $1500 later everything seemed ok.
In the last 100 miles, however, I began to notice a burning smell and two days ago there was a large amount of smoke billowing out of the side of the engine on the passenger side.
Took in into the repair guys and they say I may need a new engine because of a "tensioner" that can cause big trouble. The final diagnosis isn't in yet.
Does this sound like anything anyone has encountered?

If it's the timing belt tensioner, there are lots of posts about problems with them. But it should have been replaced when the belt was done. It's a $1000+ job because they have to tear it all down again just like they did for the belt. I think you've got a claim against the garage here.
Unless you ran it out of oil, I think the tensioner failure shouldn't damage the engine. But I'm not 100% sure of that.
Good luck with it.

Well, they just told me it's the "cam tensioner" which is behind (in the engine) the job they just did and therefore it could not have had anythng to do with the timing belt work.
The garage consented to fix it for no charge, however.

I pulled into the garage after the wife had just got home and smelled oil burning a look under the car and there were two small puddles on the passenger side between the cockpit and right front wheel.
I only have 52K on my '98!
Ugh!
(sorry just some venting)

Come on, doesn't that sound just a little weird? Nobody gives away work like that. I don't know all the specifics of the engine, but what the heck is the cam tensioner?
If the belt tensioner goes, then one set of valves (I think exhaust) starts slapping the pistons.....

...the Audi dealers use. They are referring to the cam adjusters.
These sit on the head and control the tension in the cams timing chain. It is unrelated to the timing belt but I can't imagine them fixing it for free....takes about 7-9 hours to fix.

Items 9 and 10 are the cam adjusters.
