Maybe dumb question - Is there such a thing as too much down payment?

you should try and put as little down on a lease as possible. That's money you'll never see back, unless you can somehow structure it as a refundable security deposit instead of cap cost reduction (a/k/a down payment).

whatever it takes to get the monthly payment that you want to carry - the issue is what happens to the sales tax and other items - that is easily covered with a window etch policy that in turn reduces your insurance and also acts as an cash-based insurance policy - if the car is stolen - you get the policy coverage (ie. $5k policy, $10k policy)
