to follow up with said tech article, it works great...no more muddy sound in the car at all...bass can be cranked up to max if you want that "im a ford taurus coming straight from best buy's audio department and im going to play Apple bottom jeans and boots with the furrrr as loud as i can so everyone can enjoy it too!" sound if you like. but i chose a generic tupac song for bass, and a linkin park song since it was stuck in my head...
took only 7-8 layers of repeated duct tape, pulled VERY tight across the hole, and secured with even more tape on the edges.... works great. this is all i will ever need in sound. afterall my best speakers are NOT in my car. they are around my television like the rest of us. =)
varying from breakbeats, trance, rap, r&b, rock, pop etc. tried em all..no more "thudddddd...Thuddddddd. thuddddddd..." sounds! and the bass is still there, and turned up nicely...also turned up the sound way louder than i usually drive to, so i'm convinced this was a nice 0$ mod and bang for the buck!
Note: 1st Video was taken before i stretched the tape MUCH tighter over the hole to prevent movement...Make sure you get that flap area covering the hole to not reverberate at all...keep applying MoAr Tape!
Before:
With only the 1st layer of Masking tape...still sounding like crap...
After 7 or 8 more pieces of sticky goodness:
Optimus Prime Music at 5/6th max volume....=)
You know what they say, these tricks are oldies but goldies... no wonder they're in the tech archives!
oh yeah and good for at least 5WHP.

and masking tape X 10 more layers = exactly what you'd picture..worked for me...however much tougher than a turbo swap...

like perhaps inserting one or more pieces of PVC tubing in there to reduce the cross sectional area (secured with hot glue or something) vs using tape that over time may lose it's strength/adhesiveness.

a little more than half the hole was covered as in the tech article...found this to be the most bass retaining and muddle reducing location from a 5 minute test of running back and forth adjusting volume that way i didn't annoy the neighbors with the loud music
