Default My car is making a weird clicking sound in the engine compartment, any ideas?

Almost like a valve tap, but outside of the engine itself. Maybe some type of exhaust leak? What can I check before I take it in?

Thanks for any advice!

Default Check the screws that hold the plastic cover over the intake runners...if you have such a

part. I had a similar noise - I thought for certain I had a bad tappet, but it was simply a loose screw. As soon as I tightened all the plastic parts down, everything was too quiet again.

Typical problem for me...or so I'm told...

How can you tell if that is the culprit?

Default Is the clicking intermittant in cold weather? Does it go away after a while? Had this...

...in my previous A6 2.7T It was like a rapid-fire clicking.

Was told by dealer that it's a normal action of some sort of fresh air exchange valve, or something like that. Can't remember exactly. I think Ed Crawford's diagnosis in the reply below could be it. It was on the top left hand side of the engine, as I recall. Never presented any problem over the 3-years I had the car.

pull the electrical connector off the back, and wait til engine warm. then plug it back in again (briefly turn ignition off)

good luck...
