My rule of thumb is twice as often as the manufacturer recommends.
With "free scheduled maintenance" and the amount of revenue dealers generate from post warranty service, it is in their best interest for us to do less maintenance. So I just do it twice as much as they recommend.
Depending on model year and model they recommend every 7500 or 10000 miles. So, I would suggest either 3750 or 5000 so if you are still under free service, then you pay every other time.
