Default Narrowed it down to MY2000 4.2 or 2.7T

I have owned a 99 Avant for the past 4 years so either engine will probably make me more than happy. I am a little concerned about the mpg of the V8. I have heard they can be thirsty. I usually average about 22mpg with the 2.8
They both have the light colored interior that I am looking for. I dont plan on doing much modding, except adding the S4 wheels I currently have on the Avant.

Thoughts?

Default That is a dilemma...

If you're not modding, there's not a big reason to prefer the 2.7T over the 4.2 EXCEPT for the gas mileage issue if you're doing a lot of non-highway runs. The 4.2 will eat you alive for gas in around town/city driving. I'm told the mileage of both engines is comparable on the highway. I get about 24-25mpg with my 2.7T on the highway and about 21-22mpg around town...but that's a 6sp manual.

Cheers,

Default FYI, the S4 wheels won't fit the 4.2 w/out spacers...

They will set in too far with the 45mm offset. 4.2's need a 35mm offset or lower. That said, I'd still go with the 4.2. If you are looking at a '00, the 4.2 will prove to be more reliable than a 2.7t (as you probably know, '00 turbo's have been known to be a bit weaker). I'm sure you will get responses from '00 2.7t owners on their original turbo's at high mileages, but if you aren't into modding and looking for better long-term reliability, go with the 4.2.

As for gas mileage, I average ~13mpg if I do exclusively city driving. I took a nice highway trip over the weekend (averaged ~85-90mph), and got ~24mpg.

Default I'd take the 4.2. I just don't like the 2.7T very much when coupled with a Tip (my allroad)...

...although the lighter and taller geared A6 sedan is better than the allroad. I still look back on the few days I was test driving an A6 4.2 before I bought the allroad for my wife fondly though. It's all about the fender flares...

Default I'm a rather mundane driver in my 4.2. I don't launch much and I still get 20mpg combined...

I had this same choice to make 2 years ago when I bought my car. I ultimately chose my 4.2 over a 2.7t because I did not plan on modding the A6 and wanted a powerful automatic trans car so even though a 2.7t w/ 6 speed would have been fun, I needed the auto. I also spoke to a lot of mechanics at several audi dealers and pretty much got the same "it's not if the turbos blow, it's when the turbos blow"! There was going to be a 3000.00 difference in purchase price between the two and I knew I couldn't do new turbos for less than 4000.00 so it was a no brainer for me. Besides...you can never put a price on the wide fenders!

Default I've owned both 2.7T and the 4.2...

and I loved BOTH cars for different reasons.

2.7T - very quick off the line, felt lighter, more agile. I think for around the town driving, I liked the 2.7T much better. Nothing like that turbo kick!

4.2 - the fenders flares...nice, but not as quick off the line. Pulls nicely on the highway, very linear power band, and good passing power when you need it, effortless. For those with more highway driving, a great choice. Of course, there is that V8 growl as well!

Either choice is a good one. Of course, if you plan on engine mods to the 2.7T, there is a LOT of potential untapped power there!

Default one more thing...

the styling of the front end was different on the '00 4.2 than the 2.7T and 2.8. The 4.2 had a front end style that was not used on the other trim levels until 2002 with the update. So in a way your 6 yr old car will look a few years younger by carrying the newer styling. Another bonus.

I wanted the 4.2 but the best I could find was about $5k difference 2 years ago when I got my '00 2.7T and I was already at my self-governed budget limit as it was so I passed. I love my 2.7T and still have hopes of one day getting a chip and K04's if needed. I got the clearance from the wife many months ago but then other expenses came up and I have held off to spare the trans. and turbos a bit more. Last week I also picked up a third car for the household that will only be with us for 6 months through my company so I am holding off on anything I don't need right now.

I don't get the chance to follow my own car anywhere but in the past week I have followed my Audi two or three times while the wife drove my car, and I have to say it is one sexy beast! Jaspis Green with tint and 4.2 rims...

Default Mileage depends on the driver and the type of driving you do..

I get about 21 MPG with my 4.2 but it is mostly highway.

Default ...and I tend to give it some gas and I get about 17mpg...

but the 2.7T did not do much better in similar traffic, about 18-19mpg
