Need Advice? Synthetic or regular power steering fluid?
I recently purchased a 98 Audi A6 and i need to top off the power steering fluid... I know you can't mix synthetic with regular which should I use? What did the car come with? Everything looks very much stock no modifications were made.

Use the factory Pentosin or you risk damaging the system.
Yes, you really can destroy the seals if you use the wrong stuff.
You should be able to get it for ~$15 a liter at your local Audi or VW dealer

I use the 11S (red cap), which is the synthetic version I believe.
CHF 11S has a wider temp range. I think that you are safe with either 7.1 (green cap) or 11S.<ul><li><a href="http://www.pentosin.de/eng/products/chf/body_hydraulic.html">Pentosin</a></li></ul>

Hold on to your hats. Who said you cant mix synthetic 11S with the 7.1 hydraulic fluid?
The two fluids have the same chemical composition. The difference is that one is man made and the other is organic based. 1992 and newer cars specify 11S, but in in a pinch the 7.1 is just fine. This is true of engine oil as well. Using anything other than either of these two specific hydraulic fluids is a risking major damage to seals and rubber parts of the system.
