Need input on 1995.5 S6 Avant

I'm looking for an entry-level Audi to replace my SUV. I was considering a 1999 A4 Avant 1.8T but find its tight on space. I think the S6 would be a good candidate to hold me over for a year or two until Audi or one of its competitors offers a decent sized AWD sports wagon, such as an A6 Avant 2.7T with 6 speed.
I would appreciate specific information on what to look for or to avoid on a used S6 Avant and any general comments as well.
Thanks.
Eric

Eric,
The UrS6 is flat out my favorite car of all time. Too bad I only have the slow version for now! I plan to get an S6 next year, maybe sooner. No major problem spots that I have heard of, but here and there you hear of transmission problems, ac problems, then there is the fuel line leak thing. Visit UrS4.com for a ton of info on these cars. That is the best site for the UrS4/6.
My direct comments come from the A6 model, which is similar but slower, softer, and an automatic. Even in its 172hp form, the A6 is a great car. Not a super sports sedan, but great for either daily driving or long trips. Plenty of room, comfortable, great instrument layout, and a great design. In the S6, you add a 20v turbo, better brakes, stiffer suspension, a 5-speed, sport seats, white gauges, sport steering wheel, S6 badges and S6 wheels, and like I said... the car is perfect in my book. Plus you have many tuning options through almost any tuner.
If you're worried about reliability or problems, get yourself an extended warranty. The A6 has a pretty bad automatic transmission track record, so I got a warranty... on the A6 I have already recovered over half the cost of the warranty in a little over 3 months (term is 36/36). On the 100CS, however, I haven't made a claim yet. I hope I don't have to, of course.
>>Muhammad

This is my favorite Audi to date! Its fast and a whole lot of fun to drive. Its very tossable and it has plenty of power. And an added bonus is its rarity.
I too would like a an A6 Avant with the 2.7t and a six speed!

1. I would hardly call Audi's 1996 $55,000 flagship "entry-level." Did you mean that this would be your first Audi?
2. You also seem to imply that an UrS6 Avant would not meet your space needs as much as a newer model might. I don't have the Avant specs handy, but I'm guessing that a newer model is not going to have any significant amount of additional space.
3. Or, perhaps the emphasis was on "sports" wagon, in which case you might think a newer model might give better performance. If you intend to keep the car stock, the newer cars will give a slight edge in performance (for a huge margin in cost). For aftermarket performance, for the time being, the I5 20v turbo can be modified to a greater extent and for a lot less money than the V6tt (one turbo costs much less than two turbos, etc.).
4. The UrS models did have some transmission problems, but most of these were solved by the time that the car became the S6. All UrS models suffer from a fuel leak, for which there is now a recall. There were no other significant weaknesses. (That is not to say that the car cannot nickel and dime you to death; it could, though it probably won't).
5. Parts for this car are VERY expensive (mandatory ~$18/ea. spark plugs, etc.).
6. The good news is that most UrS6s still have some of their warranty left. This is a huge buying point (see expensive parts above).
I cannot recommend one of these cars more highly. Bang for the buck cannot be beaten (Thank you "Unintended Acceleration" fiasco!). However, if you plan on flipping the car in a couple of years, you may want to think about the flip side of the coin I just mentioned.

Hi Jimmy,
1. Yes, I meant "entry level" in the sense that it may be my first Audi, and also in the sense that the cost is reasonable for a car of its class.
2. I have space concerns about the A4 Avant, which is why I'm considering the S6 instead.
3. I won't touch the current A6 Avant, that 2.8L is an underachiever. I would take an A6 with the 1.8T over the 2.8 any day, since the 1.8T can be easily enhanced. Of course the 2.7T would be much better.
I've read a bit about upgrades for the 2.2 turbo, looks very promising!!
4 & 5. Thanks for the warning.
If I get one, I'll probably keep it until something better comes along, which may end up being quite a long time!
Eric
