Default A comment.....

I replaced ours on our 2.8 motor at 58k. The waterpump bearing was starting to make noise and so were some of the roller bearings. This goes under the "pay me now, or pay me a whole lot later" theory. Its just not worth take the chance of bent valves(or worse). The cost of the repair should have been negotiated off of the purchase price.
A little servicing goes along way to a reliable and pleasant Audi ownership.

Default Re: ditto. I had mine done at 48K under warranty...due to bad water pump.

I'm not sure where you guys live, but I had a guy down the road from me tell me it'd be about $3K for the timing belt change....due to the labor & time. Anyway, I ghaaur-uuuun-Tee I'll drive to where YUSE is for the work if it's only a grand! boooyaaaa!

Default paralle universe calling..... i just bought 99 A6 avant too

Big difference in miles though. Mine has twice as much (120K) as yours. the maintenence records indicate tbelt service was done at 80K, so i figure it will need doing again in 40K. hopefully by then, i'll have figured a few things out and will tackle it myself.

good luck with your new car. i love mine.

Default replacement cost.....

Labor, I don't know about since I DIY all of the work on our cars except for alignments(not choking up for a 50k+ Hunter alignment machine). It truely depends on the details of what are done. I replaced the following which probably is not shop standard for TB replacement(but leads to reliability):
-timing belt and serp belt
-tensioner piston and tensioner roller
-roller
-accessory belt tensioner/roller
-motor mounts
-crank case pcv/hose assembly
-valve cover gaskets
-spark plugs and wire set
-waterpump(Hepu- oem manufacturer) , warning Graf pumps have poor castings and tend to leak and have poor alignment to the belt that drives it.
-thermostat
If memory serves me , the parts cost was around $500-600. Its alot of work, the front of the car needs to come off and I did not need to replace seal at the time. Not to add more pain to your new purchase, but I found Rad leaks(side seal) on our car at 62k, so its worth a check while your in there. Generally, the quotes on labor here seem to range from 6+. This can be a somewhat useless figure depending on what shop hourly wage is. I would not worry so much about the hourly wage or cost as much as if the shop has talented and detail oriented techs.

Default I'd do it based on age, mileage isn't the only factor.

Age is as important to belts as mileage. At 7 years and 60k, I'd change the timing and serpentine belts (and associated tensioners and rollers) and the water pump.
