Audi RS6 Targets M5

The 444bhp Audi RS6 will be launched in the UK this summer and should put BMW's iconic M5 well and truly in the shade. Performance claims are stunning: 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds, 0-124mph in 18 seconds and a top speed governed `smoothly' at 155mph. Past experience with the RS4 suggests that `smoothly' means not governed at all - in which case the RS6 should be well capable of hitting 180mph in the right conditions. The UK order book opens in June with first deliveries in September.

The RS6 is a joint effort between Audi AG and quattro GmbH, the company's performance division. Cars will begin production at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm before being shipped to quattro GmbH's facilities for final assembly. Unlike previous RS models, the RS6 will be available in both Avant (estate) and saloon body styles.

The twin-turbo 4.2-litre V8 engine that powers the RS6 features five valves per cylinder, hydraulic adjustment of intake cam timing, and two-stage intake manifolds. Two pressure-loss-optimised intercoolers also help in the quest for massive power. A headline-grabbing 450PS (444bhp) is developed all the way from 5700-6400rpm and the peak torque output of 413lb ft stretches from 1950rpm to 5600rpm.

Audi has struggled in recent times to recreate the magic of the original Quattro. The 1994 RS2, which was jointly developed with Porsche, catapulted to sixty in 4.8sec thanks to its 315bhp turbocharged engine but it lacked ultimate involvement. It was the same story with the more recent RS4 - huge performance but limited fun. This time Audi has gone to exceptional lengths to ensure its new performance flagship will deliver a truly special driving experience.

The RS6 sees the first appearance of a new mechanical active damping system called Dynamic Ride Control (DRC). The system links diagonally opposed shock absorbers with a central valve. When cornering forces act upon the car, oil flows via this central valve, creating what Audi calls `a supplementary damping force'. The system is claimed to almost entirely eliminate rolling and pitching, endowing the RS6 with a level of composure no rival can match. The Electronic Stability Program has also been recalibrated to suit a more enthusiastic driving style.

Braking performance should be astonishing with 375mm `floating' discs coupled to eight-pot callipers at the front and a 335mm single-piston set-up at the rear. The discs lurk behind 18-inch nine-spoke alloys (19-inch wheels are an option). In terms of outright point-to-point speed the RS6 should be something of a weapon.

In fact the only fly in the ointment for evo types is the lack of a manual gearbox option. All RS6s will come with a five-speed auto that can be manually shifted either via the gearlever or by using the steering wheel-mounted shift paddles. Prices for the RS6 have yet to be announced but we expect it to cost around £52,000.

http://www.evo.co.uk/news/newsdetail.asp?id=121</a
