New S4 0-60 performance-I'm confused
in Automobile mag Dec.issue they claim they are going from the 250 hp 2.7T engine to a 4.2L 344 hp V8 w/303 pound-feet of torque. The 2 engines weigh the same. They claim 0-60 in 5.6 sec's. Don't I remember that the 250 hp S4 was 0-60 in 5.5 sec's???????

The two cars DO NOT weigh the same...
...almost two tons for the new S4 Avant.
That plus gearing, plus torque profiles, means different 0-60, 0-100, and 0-120 profiles (the new S4 should seem stronger the further up the scale you go).
Likewise, a tiptronic S4 Avant, without any radical gearing or final drive changes, is not going to show ANY perceivable performance improvement over the current S6 Avant (only 100 lbs heavier and slightly more torque).

It's not surprising considering that....
an S6 isn't much quicker than an 2.7. In fact, 2.7 has been clocked 0-60 in 5.9 sec while the quickest S6 has only been times at the low to mid 6's. Even if it's auto vs manual, the performance should be similar. Even an auto 2.7 can run 6.6 which is only about .2 - .3 sec behind a S6 with a whopping 90hp advantage. I believe there are several less obvious reasons other than weight and horsepower.
1. Higher gearing in the V8 was needed to avoid horrifying EPA gas mileage rating.
2. Audi had often purposely down-rated its turbo charged engines to justify the extra cost of upgrading to bigger engines.
3. Turbo charge Audi has a flat torque that is unapproachable by normal-aspiritated engines; meaning more power all the time.
4. when manufactors obtain rating for engine output they often do it at the worst senario case meaning that for turbo cars, lots of heat soak and no fans blowing cold air.
However, 0-60 mph doesn't represent the whole performance story but that and the 1/4 mile is more heavily looked at because it mimic stop light drag race the best. the V8 is most likely to out accelerate the 2.7 once past 60 by a good margin. at least according to the V8 guys. (just to share a secret... you can outright burn the V8s even you just pop in some aftermarket cpu with exhaust and air box, just as long as you can afford to replace the turbo if you have a leadfoot)

The best published time for the S6 is 6.07 by Motor Trend...
If you are going to use the best time for the A6 2.7T stick, you should use the best time published for the S6...
Of course, my established times overrule all times obtained by any mag!!!
Best times:
S6: 6.10
4.2: 6.65
2.7T Auto: 7.03
Just kidding...but those are my best, to the best of my recollection...I would like to try a different 2.7T though, as I suspect it can do a little better.

Too much...but since I'm...
sick today...way too much...I'm bored and feel like sh*t...ran out of TiVo stuff to watch...
It does seem like I'm on it all the time...but it is intermittent...if work is slow and I'm sitting there bored outta my skull, I'm on more...if busy, I'm not on at all...
I know, I know, I'm pathetic.

Ran outta Tivo stuff to watch!?
That's my worst nightmare...
Fortunately I've got such a backlog of racing to catch up on, that I won't be running out of stuff for a while...
