Default A new twist on the fading info display

My luck just sucks lately. As I'm driving home today, after being on the road for 40 minutes, my info display just up and disappeared. There was nothing but 3 horizontal lines and no information. I tried to turn it on and off with the button under the wiper arm... nothing.

When I got home, shut down the car, restart... all info reappears. WTH?

Default That is just plain weird. Mine seems to have no relationship to heat, cold, wet dry, but has never

gone completely.

Default Usually the connectors to the display that go bad over time. Alfas do this too.

If these are the same as the 164, it's a flat ribbon cable that is soldered to the display. When it gets cold, the materials shrink and the connections get weak or don't connect at all.

There is a fellow who reapirs the 164 displays for $500 a pop and warranties his work to be better than original. Maybe time to get him started on Audi displays.

Is there anything you don't know?

Default I took my display apart to fix this, but chickened out when I couldn't find the ribbon cable or

connections. Pretty sure it is the same as the Alfas where the soldered or socketed connections are intermittent rather than failure of the display itself.

Default The only problem is...

I'd be without gauges or a car while he fixed it.

Default I think Audi should set up a reman program where you can swap yours for like $150. Once I figured

out how to do it, I'd repair those puppies all day for $75 a crack and let the dealer keep the other $75 for install.

Default The colder the ambient temp, the better mine looks

It's been in the 60's & 70's for the past few days and I've been lucky to be able to see what gear I'm in.

All cars have specific model foibles, but a lot is the same across all brands:-)
