newbie questions on new A6 4.2 purchase
Hello all, been lurking here for a while and have decided to get an '04 A6 4.2, wanted to run some questions by the gurus: 1) your opinions on the factory navigation system; is it possible to safely install an aftermarket system? 2) is the sport package comfortable for the roads in Michigan, or is better to opt only for the factory 17" wheels. 3) Is it possible to get the power rear sunshade without getting the solar sunroof which comes as part of the package.
4) How much can I expect off of MSRP in this part of the country?. Your replies are greatly appreciated, and I look forward to getting one of these fine machines soon. Thank you for your help.

I second that.
Sport suspension is by no means harsh. I think it can be safely said that most here who opted for standard suspension on their 4.2s wish they'd have gone for sport. BTW, in addition to suspension and wheels, the 4.2's Sport Package includes sport seats. They're more supportive and more comfortable than standard seats IMO, though the added side bolstering may make them uncomfortable for large people.
There's no way to get the power rear shade on a 4.2 without getting the solar roof. Your options are a manual rear shade (available through the parts department) or a 2.7T (power rear and manual side shades part of "Luxury Package"; also includes "Premium" leather).
As for price, I recommend working from invoice up rather than from sticker down. IMO, anywhere from $1000 - $1500 over invoice is fair for a 4.2. It's fair for you the buyer while allowing a reasonable profit for the dealer. I'd go in and offer invoice + $1000 and see whether or not they take it.
Being in Michigan, make sure you get the Cold Weather Package! (On the 4.2, it includes heated F+R seats, ski sack, AND heated steering wheel.) Also, I don't recommend that you even consider a 4.2 without the Premium Package; the bi-xenons are fantastic and the auto-dimming mirrors and digital compass are pretty cool, too.

If you dont need the entire sports package, save and get aftermarket.
The sports package new consists of sport seats, suspesion and the 17" polished 5 spoke wheel correct? I beleive its $2,500 in all. I myself was in a similar situation but since sport seats dont fit to my liking and I upgraded to 18" wheels anyway, it was more reasonable to purchase a non-sport and aftermarket suspension (which I am working on, see sig) and use an independant mechanic which for H&R's/Bilstiens and install w/ alignment came out to a total of $1025. If you are planning on keeping the 5 spoke wheel, you might want the stock sport package. Otherwise, you can probably make a killing selling the wheels alone (a lot of people want them, I'd like them for a winter whel myself). Just an option, the non-sport needs to be lowered, that much is certain.

Go with the factory Navigational System....
I have one in my '00 A6 4.2 and it works great in conjunction with the factory installed radio system. Audi's radio control system is made to work hand-in-hand with their Nav, On-Star, and telephone systems. You might save a little $$ by going with an aftermarket Nav system, but IMHO it will not integrate as nicely as the factory system does.

I got the sun shade standard without the package
But then, that may be specific to the 2.7T (as with the standard sport package).
Are you trading in? You might consider going to car max and getting a check for your car.
You can wiggle a little with the sales price, but don't expect movement as you would with, say, a GM product.

Shades are not standard on the 2.7T. They're available only as part of the Luxury Package.
Package also includes "Premium Leather". Unfortunately, the "Build An Audi 2.7T" page at audiusa.com fails to mention the Luxury Package. It's just a web site error; the package definitely exists.
