Default Noob needs help: Any information on compatibility between 4B0 997 551 ECU and BEL engine?

Hey guys, care to share any expert opinions?

Ultimately, I'm trying to figure out whether or not a 4B0 997 551_ ECU will work on my car in lieu of my stock 4Z7 907 551R box.

The 4B0 ECU is for cars built into 2003 with the APB engine code, whereas the 4Z7 ECU is for 2003 with the BEL engine. I have the BEL engine.

I'm not sure if I can use the 4B0 ECU because I'm not sure what the differences are between the two builds (and / or among supporting bits and pieces). It's my understanding that the APB build was classified as TLEV, whereas the BEL was classified LEV, but I've got little clue about additional differences and whether there are any that might preclude the effective use of the 4B0 ECU.

For instance, I know that while the B5S4's with tiptronic had secondary air injection, the manual transmissions did not. Does anyone know if this is also the case for the C5A6, or did all C5A6's have secondary air - APB, BEL, Auto, and Manual alike? My guess is that all were equipped with secondary air, but that's my problem - it's all guessing.

Likewise, I'm unsure of the dates on which the coilpacks were switched to the push down (as opposed to the bolt-down) type, and whether this is another indicator of difference between the APB and BEL engines, or whether this was a minor change that occurred elsewhere along the way.

Anyhow, if anyone has any insight regarding compatibility between a 4B0 ECU and the BEL engine (or vice versa), I'd really appreciate any valuable information. Stolenmanners - I know that you dropped an APB motor into your car, and I'm assuming you are running a 4Z7 ECU.... how'd that work out for you? Were you able to resolve your secondary air issues, and how is the car running now (i.e. any weird compatibility issues, etc.)?

Bottom line question - can anyone think of informed and specific reasons why the engine and ECU would not function together correctly? As always, I'm all ears

Sorry for the noob post, but we all need a little help from our friends once a while. Have pity.

Thanks guys,

R

Interesting. I guess the 4Z7 wasn't only used on the Allroad.

Default To answer your secondary air question.

The Allroad (APB) '01 - '02 (BEL) '03 - '05; the C5 A6T's (APB) '00 - '02 (BEL) '03 - '04; S4 (APB) 00 - '02 had secondary air.

All of them, right? Regardless of tranmission type? Thanks - that's what I thought...

All, regardless of transmission type.
