odd starting problem
#11
My 2003 A6Q 2.7T has the same exact starting problem.
#4 misfire came up often, but I have replaced all 6 coils, new battery, fuel pump, air filter, water pump, spark plugs, coolant temp sensor, fuel pressure regulator hose, auxiliary water pump, and the list goes on and on.
The coils were recently replaced, and now it starts fine from a cold start (didnt use to). After everything I have done, that has been the only improvement. It is really annoying. Ive taken it to 4 different shops and 2 different audi dealerships and its still not fixed.
fuel pressure was ok, system control ok, residual pressures ok.
There still seems to be a slight oil leak from the left turbo. When it starts, smoke always comes out of the exhaust and you can smell the burnt fuel or oil. Can smell it also every time I drive it and get out of the car, stinks up my whole garage.
Anyone have any ideas please?

I have the same P0118 code and the car is hesitant to start after it has been standing for at least 30 minutes or so. However when it stands for longer, like overnight it starts fine. I will check on replacing the Coolant Temp Sensor, anyone have instructions (I will look it up here)?

Still getting the same problem after replacing the CTS and cleaning the MAF with another seafoam treatment. No CEL whatsoever. I am going to get the vag-com 409.1 cable unless there are other ideas. Has there been issues with a cable such as this working with an A6?

Odd starting problem with P1296, check engine light and more
Car starts fine when cold. When warm, from time to time, car will not start, until it is left alone for a couple of minutes. Car smells gas.
Fault code P1296 - cooling system malfunction (always comes back immediately after reset), plus the following code:
The internal tests results for smog control are as follows:

Exhaust gas temperature sensor 1 range/performance.
After several starts, the check engine light comes on.Exhaust gas temperature sensor 1 range/performance.
The internal tests results for smog control are as follows:
Exhaust Gas Recirculation: Passed Secondary Air Injection: Failed or Incomplete
Oxygen Snesor Heating: Passed Evaporative Emissions: Passed
Oxygen Semsor(s): Passed Catalyst Heating: Passed
Air Conditioning: Passed Catalytic Converter: Passed
A while back, apart from the P1296, I have also seen:Oxygen Snesor Heating: Passed Evaporative Emissions: Passed

Air Conditioning: Passed Catalytic Converter: Passed
16502 intermittent P0118
Engine Coolant Temp.Circ High Input
17861 intermittent P1453
Exhaust gas temperature sensor 1 open/short to B+
17819 Static P1411
Sec.Air Inj.Sys.,Bank2 Flow too Flow
17831 Static P1423
Sec.Air Inj.Sys.,Bank1 Flow too Low
17862 Intermittent P1454
Exhaust gas temperature sensor short 1 to ground.
The car is due for a timing belt, thermostat, water pump, ... change (108,000) miles. My question is: if this work is done, in particular changing the thermost and temperature sensor, will my "odd start problem" go away? Thanks for your help. BP
