Default Oil Consumption

I recently purchased a 2.7T and just turned over a 1000 miles on the odometer. I have been checking the oil after every fueling as the owner's manual suggests. When I first got the car, the oil level was in the middle of the hash marks. The oil level has dropped so that now it is as the bottom of the hash marks and more oil needs to be added.

I know new engines during the break-in period will consume more oil than normal, but I never had a car consume this much oil. Is this what everybody else is experiencing?

Default Re: Oil Consumption

My 2.7t burned 1 qt in the first 1000 mi. In the next 4000 mi it has used about 1/16 in on the dipstick. In the airplane world there is a lot of advice being passed around that says you need to run an engine fairly hard or the rings will not seat properly.

I don't know if the reasoning is corect but some ferry pilots have gotten airplanes with mid time engines that were burning so much oil that they could not take them on long overwater flights. In several instances they were able to stop the oil burning by running the engine/s at abnormally high power settings (85-100%)for several hours. If this reasoning is true then we would be wise to drive hard in order to get quick ring seating. I ran my car pretty easy at first (under 4000 rpm) then progressively increased the power until I would sometimes go to 5 or 6k at 1000 mi.

Default Using 1/2 quart during the first 1,000 miles is completely normal. This is comensurate with the 1

quart (approx.) my 4.2 used during the first 2,500 miles.

Default not so on my 4.2

5700 miles and not one quart used! Best new engine I've ever seen, although I haven't driven it over 110 mph and don't know if the rev limiter/governor really cuts in at 130mph on US spec cars...

But the 4.2 piston ring load can't be remotely close to the 2.7T if BMEP has anything to do with seating pressures/pressure backed rings....I would have expected the turbo to seat quicker and not use as much oil unless something is on the loose end of the spectrum of build-up tolerances.....

OTOH, 1/2 quart in 1000 miles is well within the industry std for oil consumption, which is somewhere around 1qt/800 miles.<p>John.Binford@DTRA.MIL

Default My point is that it is normal to have higher oil consumption when a car is new.

My 4.2 would hit the limiter at 135 MPH then back down to approx. 131. Now it's chipped by PES and is not governed. My engine feels like a monster. It just wants to go and kick but.

Default Your "break-in-period" consumption sounds OK to me. Look for it to begin dropping ...

significantly over the next several thousand miles. Mine consumed about 1/2 - 3/4 quart in the first 5000 miles (and most of that by about the 1500 mile mark). Since the 5000 mile oil change, consumption seems to now be almost negligible. For example, I'm up to about 6250 miles now, and the dipstick reading seems virtually unchanged since the oil change at 5000.
