Default oil filter interval

Just noticing in my dealer service records-they are not changing out the filter every time there is an oil change. The Maintenance manual (at least MY 00) is calling for an oil change every 8000 miles (following the 5000 mile break-in change), and changing the filter every 16,000 miles. Am I reading that right? Your comments/experiences, please.

Alex,

Just checked the copies of my service work orders. They state that they changed the filter at 5k and 10k. It also says they used C-GTX 5W30 oil - not sure if this is good oil or not.

Default Change every time you change oil. I have run 20,000 miles without changing, HOWEVER , I ...

also used a very large and very fine filter media (Bypaas filter to less than 0.5 micron). If you have the least mechanical ability, you will be able to change oil/filter yourself. And I suggest that you change the filter EVERY time. The filter is too cheap not to change, given the money (you engine)it's supposed to protect.

I just did a chnage myself for the first time. It's one of the easiest cars with respect to getting to the filter, it's right before your nose, once you get the shield off.

Some synthetic oil companies NEO, and AMSOIL proclaim long oil interval changes (up to 25000 miles) BUT they always recommend that you change the filter once or twice within that interval (depending upon the filter quality).

I have run the 20,000 miles oil change interval, but I also performed an oil analysis, as I was worried that the oil wouldn't hold up. But it did.

Hope this might have been of help.

Default Post more about your oil analysis, please....

I've been posting about oil analyis on my A4 Avant, A6, Saab, Passat & '73 911 all supporting the idea that a 7,500 or 10k oil change interval with synthetic is just fine -- your 20k is the longest interval I've read about having an oil analysis done...

I'd be interested in your specific oil analysis readings, if you'd post them (incl. TBN if you had that done).

Thanks,
Jon

Default Re: oil filter interval

I think you are right. When I switched over to Synth at my 16K service I bought my own Mobil 1.

I just Assumed that they would change the filter. I never once ever changed my own oil and did not change the filter. The first clue was when i picked up my car there were (2) Quarts of oil that they did not use. Then upon checking my service record their was no record of the filter change. Needless to say I was really pissed. I called my service rep and he informed me that Audi does not call for a filter change at this time.

So I went out and Bought new oil at my cost and they changed it and a new filter the next day. The best part is that they tried to charge me for the filter.

Bottom line is ALWAYS ask the service rep what they plan on doing.

I have no problem paying for a 14 Dollar filter
If I know up front.
