Oil Leak in Rear Main Seal 2001 A6 2.8
I have a 2001 Audi A6 2.8 with 69K miles in which has just been diagnosed with a rear main seal oil leak. The car is in great condition with Full Synthetic oil changes every 2500 miles and all regular scheduled maintenance. Is it worth fixing this oil leak or am I better off trading the car in? Anyone know how much it typically costs to fix this type of oil leak? Also, will more problems arise once this is fixed or will it be fine for another 50K miles? Need advice, ready to trade it in??

It's not THAT bad. The transmission has to come down and then it's replaced.
Make sure it's not really a cam seal and the oil is just running down until it drips on the bellhousing.

Agreed. A bit of PITA, but if the rest of the car is OK, certainly not
worth selling off. Happens to all kinds of cars for any number of reasons. Not the kiss of death by any means.

Rear main seal is very very rare on the 2.8. I would get a second opinion
before authorizing this repair. Many a 2.8 oil leak finds it way to the lowest point, which is the bottom of the bell housing. So lots of techs just assume rear main seal. Especially those that dont work on these cars every day.

I brought home a used 2001 A6 2.8 1st of November '04 and found it too had a rear main seal failure. It had 39,800 miles. It was fixed under the original factory warranty. Is yours still not covered?

Agree with 6ULDV8; I had two RMS's changed out when in fact it was the upper oil pan gasket that was
the true cause of the leak. The oil drains down the rear of the engine and appears to be a RMS to many techs. Just get 2nd opinion, esp. if you will pay out of pocket. If engine comes out, you should do the oil pan gaskets at same time as the incremental cost is negligible. I'n not saying it can't be the RMS, but many RMS's have been changed only to find out later that is was the oil pan gasket (upper or even lower) or even the cam adjusters and it just looks like the RMS from underneath while the engine is still in the car.
