Well, so far so good. I sealed it up with a new gasket and lots of RTV on the corners, and waited a little more than 24 hours. No leaks so far, although it didn't leak immediately the last time either. So I'll be holding my breath for a while...

What kind of RTV are you using? I've had good luck with The Right Stuff on engine oil pans. Worst problem with this stuff is you have to put the parts together within about 5 minutes so if you're really slow on dispensing the stuff (it's an aerosol-like can with a trigger) it might get too hard on you. Supposedly it's good to go immediately, but I usually wait overnight. Good to 450F continuous, 500F intermittent.
Meets GM 998-5990
Ford WSE-M4 G 323-A6
Chrysler GF-44-A
OTOH, Loctite 5920 is supposed to be ok on applications up to 350C but the technical data sheet doesn't support that IMHO:

I looked at the tds' for a few Loctite products and The Right Stuff...other than the high temp they all seem pretty close, varying cure times.
Audi also has a specified valve/cam cover material sold by ECS...D154103A1. 100gm (~3oz) for $95!!!

I just had the same problem. Can't recall how long I waited, but it was probably at least overnight. I used Loctite black RTV.
Can PCV also cause this? How do you check? It's not the suction jet--my 2001 2.7 Tip doesn't appear to have a suction jet or an F-hose.

I think you got it now. I tired replacing the whole PCV system of corrugated tubing and it wasn't the problem. VCGs with a good 24 hour cure on the RTV seems to be the best route.
