is oil pressure switch just to provide indication of low pressure....

Yes, usually. But it won't shut down the pump (purely mechanical) or the engine...
It will just scream at the driver. There is an oil level/temp <b>sender</b> in the bottom of the oil pan, too.

Low oil PRESSURE results in a red warning in the dash display along with beeping. Red oil can symbol
with the drop coming out the spout universal icon. It's up to you to shut down the engine if you encounter this situation.
