Default Re: I didn't see any change in the first 10 mins.

I've never seen anything significant either beyond 5 minutes. I just wait roughly 10 minutes before checking it so that I know that it is going to settle as far as it's going to.

Default I check mine cold, first thing in the morning

It may not be Audi's recommendation, but is the most consistent method of measurement. 8 hours is definitely enough to get the oil to run down.

Yeah, it's hard for me to break that habit too. I'm just wondering if they want us to take the measurement "before" all of the oil settles. Like maybe the operating level without the turbulence of the engine turning. Maybe to the Audi engineers that is more important than a settled reading.

Who knows, I don't. I just get the feeling they specify warm for a reason.

Default Keep in mind that hot oil expands...

so you have to adjust your reading on the dipstick, i.e., if it reads full when dead cold it'll be overfull if read when hot. In my experience, when cold if its full, the dipstick reads at about the bottom of the hatched area.

Default They do specify a warm engine test because...

...that's how to get an accurate reading. I brought my car to the dealer after finding the oil level at the "add" mark (morning COLD test) with about 1,100 miles on the odometer. The service manager brought me into the shop with all the techs there around my car, where they presented me with the dufuss of the day award---Showed me the oil level at warm temp: it was right at the 3/4 full level. They know me pretty well at the dealership, so they had no problem laughing at my expense and suggesting that I stop being so lazy and read the owner's manual more carefully. Boy, was my face red!

Thats the way I thought you were supposed to check it although I mistakenly added oil at 600 because I thought the level (cold) was way down. This pushed it into the overfill zone when warm. Just a smidgen over so the dealer said don't worry about it.
