Just read that the 4.2 engine in the A8 is 330hp. I thought that this was the same engine in the A6 4.2.
If so, why doensn't the A6 4.2 do this?
Can you change the A6 4.2 from 300 to 330?

Re: OK, A8 4.2L makes 330hp now, why not A6 4.2?
Well, the S6 engine makes 340 and the S4 makes 344.. and its all the same basically 4.2 v8...The short answer is that Audi is concerned with fuel economy for we US drivers so they have decided that since the A6 is the most affordable car it should have the best mileage.. thus the tall gear ratios and the low rpm shift points.. The A8 gets more hp to counteract its additional weight. The S6 gets more since its an S and the S4 gets even more cuz its got to.... You can chip an A6 4.2 and get aprox 20hp more .. then if you add a performance exhaust system you can get up to another 15-20 more. This will bring you close to 340 on a perfect day.. If you chip the tip it will add to the delight. In order to actually convert your 4.2 to an S6 4.2 you would have to change intake manifolds ( the A6 uses a 3 stage and the S6 uses a 2 stage) as well as cams, exhaust and tranny plus other goodies..not cheap.. Best to hope for is chipping and exhaust.. It really does make a difference..

Re: Interesting....so, how much & what for exhaust upgrade?
Well, theres a wealth of info on that topic here. Do a search here for Stoneys FAQ and you will find many users who have tried the available mods for the 4.2.. There arent many but it will give you a good idea of your choices. Exhaust systems are kinda a personal choice thing. If you want it to roar or if you just want a sportier growl.. fortunately some of the guys here have documented the performance of the various systems so you can make a good decision.. Good Luck!

the 4.2 in the A8/S4 is a good bit different engine
All the accessories are driven off the back side of the engine. There are something like 5 chains back there. The block, heads, and accessory drives are all different. Probably intake manifold too. Internals are likely all the same though.

maybe it's not 330hp?
It would be interesting to put both cars on a 4wheel dyno and see what's what.
I don't believe anything the mfrs say these days.
Especially with HP cars. Ford got stung with their 320hp Cobras IIRC...barely pulled 250 at the rear wheels and someone got suspicious.
I would expect a 330hp A8 to pull much better than a total of 250hp at all four wheels. The question is whether a 300hp A6 would pull 30hp less.
Who has a dyno slip on a 300hp A6 V8??
