Default Ok, C/O's vs. separate spring/shock...which one avoids the

axle issue best. I want to lose 1" to put me at 25 1/4 and still throw gear and dogs and guys in back.
Any input ?
It'd be the HR Sport/Koni option for separates, and the HR C/O's.

Default The H&R Coilovers are great, and...

IIRC, the grooved bilsteins were the culprit of the axle rubbing issue. What you should really consider is cost (the coilovers are more expensive), and the characteristics you are seeking.

Coilovers can lower the car, but not sacrifice as much in ride comfort. Firm, but not stiff. Lowering springs with sport or HD shocks are stiff, and more harsh than the coilovers.

I went with Bilstein H&R sport setup, ride was good, firm/stiff, but the rear of the car was about 1/2" too low for my taste. I ended up with an almost new set of H&R coilovers, and I love them!!! WIsh I went this route first, but then I would not appreciate them as much.

Default That's very low. To keep off the bump stops with a load in the back, you...

... will need high spring rates. KW Coilovers (I have them) are very high rate springs. Stiff ride, but it could handle a load. They may do the trick. I run at 25-7/8. I don't have any axle interference. Don't know what 25-1/4 would do.

German (home) site for KW.

Default well, not all coilovers are like the H&R street setup you have, BD...

most are quite stiff and designed for fast road and track use. i think the H&R streets and the bilstein PSS9's (which i had on my TT) are the only exceptions to the typical "coilover rule."

Default The "axel issue" is due to any rear spring perch being to low...

The spring/shock combos use a large diameter spring perch to accomodate the larger, stock diameter spring. Using a lower than stock spring perch location on any shock positions the spring perch dangerously close to the half shaft - avoid this! Because the Eibach and H&R springs are shorter and higher rate you should be able to use the stock, or even higher, perch location to achieve the ride height you desire.

Coilovers use a smaller diameter spring, and thus a smaller diameter spring perch. With most, you'd have to go very low to have an issue. In any case, if you go much lower than 25.5, you'll likely have to deal with rubbing issues.

Default Looks like H&R coilovers are

the way to go. No axle issue, good ride and set the ride hieght for gear, dogs and guys. If that is you at the race track in your pics, get a H Sport sway bar and show them what an Avant can do.

Default Had the sways on before that day on the track...

made a huge difference, and aside from the back straight, that car couldn't be passed.
Now to lower it.

Default Yeah but IIRC you said you kind of liked the stiff ride...

didn't you miss that "connected" feeling ?

I mean, the car being quicker and tighter to respond to input ?

Default If you are serious about kicking butt at the track and you are not as ...

... concerned about a cushy ride, then seriously consider KW coilovers. They cost more than H&R, but the quality is there. Stainless steel bodies, very firm springs. Combined with H-sports, you'll be a monster out there.
