OK, should I drive 40/80rt miles for Kendall 5w40 vs (M1 0w40 @ local Autozone). Cost not the issue.

'00 A6 2.7T, 22k, last 2 changes (11 & 16K) were M1 0w40. No probs. Do I want to up my Zinc or anything else given I keep cars a long time. For example, an '80 528 (199K) til I postponed $700 in hoses. Still drove it for 2 yrs/8k with some level of damage (cracked head). Would probably be still enjoying that classic if I didn't make that basic (and relatively cost effective) wrong decision.

If you do a little research you'll find that Mobil1 is the best OTC oil available. It's far superior to Kendall.

2001 2.7t went to a recommended 0-30 due to turbo lubrication issues when cold. I had a turbo failure on my 2000 2.7t as did many other 2.7t and S4 drivers. Amoung other things Audi started recommending 0-30 oil as a solution to the premature failure of turbos. Most dealers and many owners are not following this recommendation but I definitely would. The 0-40 should also be fine since it is close to the same viscosity as the 0-30 when cold. I can see no disadvantage to using a 0-30 or 0-40 over a 5-30, 5-40 or 5-50, at least if it's a synthetic, and the cold flow/lubrication will be superior.
As far as additives, I don't believe that you will have any problems with any decent oil if you change regularly.

I recall reading that Audi changed directions at one point and was having dealers change oil with a relatively "thick" brew like 20w50.

The MB Club has tech meetings every year and apparently there's one guy who's Mr. Fixit and everyone crawls to him with questions. In response to a complicated oil question, he answered that in his indy shop he uses Pennzoil because they will supply him in bulk and take care of making sure the tanks stay full. That's the only reason he chose that brand! His take is that all good oil is good oil, regardless of the label on it.

Mobil 1 seems to either work very well or very poorly in various cars. In all 4 of mine, it tends burn a lot.
I've used Kendall for years with excellent results even the coldest Yukon winters. Our highest milage car has 236,000 miles, sees a lot of town duty, and does not use any oil when filled with Kendall. When Kendall is not available, I use Castrol, which although not quite so good in the eyes of others, does produce minimal burn and can be found anywhere.
That said, I have to agree to some degree with phred, in that under normal conditions, so long as you have the correct viscosity, oils are pretty similar.
